PHILANTHROPY

Freedom Finders Philanthropy is a social impact investor. Our mission is to support freedom through investments in changemakers and lovebelievers working to right the wrongs of mass incarceration in the United States.

We focus on social justice issues inherent in the incarceration system. Some of the facts that inform our investments include the following:

  • The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world, both per capita and by volume, making up close to 5% of the world's population yet more than 20 % of the world's people in prison. (aclu.org)

  • At year-end 2020, an estimated 5,500,600 persons were under the supervision of adult correctional systems in the United States. (US Bureau of Justice Statistics)

  • About 1 in 47 adult U.S. residents (2.1%) were under some form of correctional supervision at the end of 2020. (US Bureau of Justice Statistics)

  • Black Americans are incarcerated in state prisons across the country at nearly five times the rate of whites, and Latinx people are 1.3 times as likely to be incarcerated as non-Latinx whites. (sentencingproject.org)

  • As of February 2022, approximately 60% of formerly incarcerated people in the U. S. were jobless in spite of their desire to work. (prisonpolicy.org)

  • Two-thirds (67 percent) of children in the juvenile justice system were children of color: 41 percent were Black and 21 percent were Hispanic (childrensdefensefund.org).

  • Children of color are disproportionately transferred to the adult criminal justice system, where they are tried and prosecuted as adults. In 2018, Black youth represented less than 15 percent of the total youth population but 52 percent of youth prosecuted in adult criminal court. Black youth are nine times more likely than white youth to receive an adult prison sentence, American Indian/Alaska Native youth are almost two times more likely, and Hispanic youth are 40 percent more likely (childrensdefensefund.org).

Freedom Finders Philanthropy makes investments of $40,000* to efforts that combat issues related to the immense problems of mass incarceration in the United States, targeting three areas:

  1. organizations addressing prevention/pre-trial/policy;

  2. organizations assisting those in custody;

  3. organizations focused on providing reentry services.

In 2023, Freedom Finders made gifts to the organizations below:
We hope you will joi us in supporting the great good they are doing:
